Confusion about advertising - platinum, gold, titanium vs. commissions - economy, basic, standard, superior.

I’m brand new here and debating on whether to open a shop or not. I’m confused about the advertising and can’t figure out how the platinum, gold and titanium subscriptions relate to the economy, basic, standard, etc. commissions. Can someone please explain? And I’m wondering if I really should hold off on advertising for a while to begin with?

Advertising and the membership levels have nothing to do with each other. The paid membership is what you should hold off on. Most people starting out do not need it. On the other hand, advertising is absolutely necessary. If your items are set up correctly, with brand name and UPC or MPN, you will be seen in Google shopping. Without that, there’s very little visibility. Good luck to you.

No one membership level includes any advertising?

Not really. You get listed on “comparison shopping engines” with a titan membership at $166 a month. Otherwise, membership doesn’t affect your advertising.

Thank you, ToysAndTreasures. I sell vintage and sometimes hand made so the most I would have would be a brand name. So the best I could hope for it seems is customers searching on this site for what I have if I don’t do any advertising?

That’s possible, but keep in mind that the advertising fee on Bonanza is only paid when you sell something, in the form of a commission. If sales come through via advertising, you pay the higher commission. If sales come through people searching on Bonanza, you pay the minimum commission.

there is also still organic searches, bing, yahoo..etc..but I would go with GPS with 6 or 9% to start…

Ok, got it! Thank you both for answering my questions, I really appreciate the help.

Thank you, ToysAndTreasures, for your answers. I’ve noticed, that when I write my shop name plus Etsy, Bonanza or eBay, only with Etsy it shows in the Google search on the 3rd and 4th position

I’ve seen in the beginning some list with membership’s content, but I don’t see it right now to compare which level of the advertising has each of them.

When I had an economy commission (without a membership), I didn’t find any of my items in the Google shopping, so after a while I’ve stopped it, at least for now.

ArtistsUnion, your items didn’t appear in Google Shopping because they don’t have the necessary product identifiers (brand name, upc, manufacturer’s part number). With your product line, there’s probably not much you can do about that.

ccmom says: March 28, 2015

I’d also like to add that your items are in google shopping from etsy..and duplicates of the same listings from different sites is frowned upon by google

butterflybuttons says: March 28, 2015

ccmom – I was wondering about duplicating Etsy listings, thanks for clarifying that.

ccmom says: March 28, 2015

It used to be grounds for getting your feed suspended, but I have noticed that since google went to paid listings instead of free listings, they don’t seem to be monitoring duplication as much, but it is still a good idea to be careful about duplicates

butterflybuttons says: March 28, 2015

I’m really glad you mentioned that ccmom. Some of the other sites I reviewed implied transferring listings from other sites to theirs was ok. I didn’t know that about Google, but it seems reasonable to keep what I sell on each site exclusive to those sites so I’m going to take your advice.

you can list them here and there are options to suppress the GPS for items individually..it is in the Batch edit…can’t hurt to have them spread out..
