Where do I begin? OK, I’ll begin with my original assumption that “all credit cards are basically the same.”

But, I’ve changed my mind, about that.

About 10 days ago I received an “email alert” from Bank of America relative to an outstanding 13.73 balance on my credit card. This was unusual, because I always pay the cards off, never carry a balance. Turns out the small balance was for something I bought late Dec. 2012, plus accumulated interest charges. I protested that I had received no statement. According to BofA that was because I had signed up for “paperless” billing. But I did no such thing. Long story short, I paid the small balance, immediately, by phone. And was assured that I would be switched back to “paper” billing.

All done, right?

WRONG.

Yesterday, in comes another email alert. Now I owe $1.50. Impossible. Once again, I made the call, but this time, none of the options included talking to anyone “live.” So I tried “live chat” on their web site. But the grammar of the “live rep” suggested she was not from “around here,” if you get my meaning. Long story short: the $1.50 charge was the interest on the $13.73. “But wait,” I typed, “I PAID that off, about a week ago.”

I can’t remember the tortured logic they used to explain why the charge was valid, nor can I make up anything on my own. But the bottom line was that I owe the money. And furthermore, that my account was closed, anyway.

Returning to the email alert, I found another phone number. Eventually, I “got lucky” and was connected to a real person. He understood my position perfectly and agreed to remove the charge as a courtesy. Then he verified the account was closed, but did not know why. I would need to talk to someone else about that. But at this point, I was actually glad it WAS closed. So, presumably, everything is now settled. We’ll see.

A few moments later, I called Chase to activate my new cards from them that had arrived. Call was answered immediately by a real live and very helpful person. After activating the cards, the Chase rep asked if there was anything else he could do. “Yes,” I said, “What will be the secret of cutting through the menu options if I need to call you?” I asked. “No secret,” he said, your call will always be answered by a real person. We’ve learned that the menu options NEVER really answer the questions people have, so we got rid of the options menu.

I guess we’ll see about that, too. But meanwhile, if what he says is true, it is a refreshing departure from the BofA way.

Not that Chase is a paragon of good customer service, but BofA seems to take the same abysmal attitude toward credit card customers as it does to mortgage holders.

Life’s little lessons.

What a story! I don’t do any business with B of A, heard too many horror stories years ago to take a chance on them. Things like disappearing deposits and worse. Glad you “hopefully” have it all resolved.

Hey Scott…we got ’’rid’’ of our BOA CC long time ago, they ‘’messed over’’ my sister’s account, when she lived for a bit with us, they ‘’messed up’’ hubby’s dad, when he was alive, but still living in FL, yet hubby had to try to help dad LDistance, get it all straightened out, and they ‘’took forever’’ to correct an overcharge error with us…finally, we dropped them, as 3’s the charm so to speak, ya’ know?

When sharing w/others at our Bowling party, about the run around they gave my father in law, if I recall, about 5 out of 6 couples/friends, who had a Bank of America Credit Card Acct. & these friends also had HORROR stories of their own about BOA…they are, IMHO, the WORST!

Thanks for Sharing js!

I paid off both my credit cards and then cut them up! Never again I’d rather pay cash, cheque, money order or Paypal. The reason I paid them off is because the interest rates were ridiculous and credit cards are just a little too convenient so I decided it’s best I just pay them off and cut them up. the Canadian Tire credit card was the worst! They harrassed me almost on a daily basis so I paid it off and told them off!!!! LOL

This is what the 99 percent are all about…Shabby banking practices that have lead us down a terrible path from all of the big banks and their greedy ways.

I long ago changed to my local credit union and have never looked back.

Good to know. Sometimes those little lessons are rather greedy of our time just to straighten them out too aren’t they? You mention cutting through the phone tree. Well I had heard that punching all kinds of random numbers would get you a rep. I did not necessarily believe this, but one time I tried it, figuring if nothing else I could punch numbers to rid me of the frustration, LOL. It worked! Could have been a fluke but…..

Hey JS. I heard those stories about B of A also. I use my local credit union’s credit card, I like being able to always get a human, and one that talks English too. wow, what a concept that is! I can pay it off each month right there at the CU when I am there if I want. We also had a Chase before and it was always an actual human I talked to on the phone too. More of us need to “ban the robot” on the phone….

I was one of those “horror stories” over 30 years ago and hubby and I will have nothing to do with B of A! He also doesn’t have anything to do with Wells Fargo.

We paid off all our credit cards but we still hold a few for “just in case”. One of them is Chase and they are fine…as credit card companies go.

We’re with you Driver! We are changing over all our accounts to the credit unions. Hubby has been using them for years, but I am just now getting out of the “banks”

PS When paying off a balance be sure to ask for the PAY OFF amount for the DATE THAT YOU ARE PAYING, otherwise they will continue to add interest. Bank of America isn’t the only one that has pulled that gamut. I’ve been caught by that one before from other companies too

I find that I do “fine” w/ my BoA CC as long as I pay in full, every month, without fail.
I recently discovered that most, perhaps not all CC companies are charging something that is basically a “minimum service charge” if any portion of a balance due isn’t paid during any portion of a month, even if I pay the balance due in full by the due date (if I had carried a balance from the previous month. So I’ve made a mental note that even in those rare situations where I decide to spread out a payoff over a couple or three months, I make sure not to let a smallish balance wait for next month. Fortunately, most of our bill paying now is done online, so it’s not such a huge deal to tell my bank to pay the $1.50 SC. Must be making an impression—when my new BoA card needed to be activated recently, I was immediately put through to a “real person” who proudly informed me that my formerly 23+% interest rate has now been reduced to “only” 11% (variable, of course….) I’m soooooo glad to finally be reasonably financially secure.
Poor big box banks, they have to make their money somewhere??? Do ya see me crying…

Remember to use those “cards for just in case” every month or so because if you don’t, they will hold it against you now and can cancel the card, and note in your credit history that THEY cancelled your card!! It’s a mark against you if they do.

If you want to cancel a card you sure can, but be sure to cut the thing up and mail it back to them, then you can pay off the balance and the card is for sure cancelled. I’d also send it back certified so someone has to sign for it.

We changed from BoA a lonnnng time back! Horrible, horrible, horrible! My sister signed up with them – I warned her about them, but she had to find out the hard way – she too, has since cancelled her business/personal association with BoA.
They really should get a clue!

What’s REALLY strange is my husband has been with them since he was a kid and had his very first savings account with them. He’s NEVER had a problem with any of his accounts, ever!! I think he’s an exception myself.

If I carried a balance on my credit union card it would be 8.9 percent. Love that rate.

I destroyed my B of A credit card some years ago. Do all business with Master Card/Barnes & Noble Book Sellers and have not had a problem in all of the years. Never ever carry a balance, and pay monthly statement on line.

Just my 2 cents worth having had my own experiences and after reading here and in another thread about PP…

They are all greedy crooks and know that they can get away with most anything unless challenged and sometimes even then. I’ll agree that Chase has relatively better CS but they are at the top of the list (we banked with them for years). Honestly, I’ve thought about starting to do all our banking at Folgers or Hills Brothers. They are open 24/7, no pesky fees and the customer service couldn’t be better!!

Posted by loneelk, Williamsburg, NM. 3,912 total posts | Posted about 1 year ago

I totally second that, @pacifica! It really chaps me that I can’t even earn 1% apr. on my savings account, but the various companies charge 10% and UP for CC interest (unless I’m stupid enough to fall for one of those limited time low rate balance transfers that Oh, BTW charge 3% to 5% balance transfer fees right off the top). It definitely pays to read the fine print on all credit cards. I was very dissapointed in my own credit union that I was receiving repeated requests by mail to accept a “pre-approved” CC w/ a very enticing intro rate. So I completed the paperwork and imagine my surprise when I rec’d notice that I’d not been approved—I have a pretty good credit rating, according to my bank, but the CU affiliated CC company wanted me to sign up for their “secured” CC—NOPE—I was very annoyed—especially when I kept getting the same “invitation” for many months thereafter—however, I just kept shredding those, and they finally got the message!
I’m getting to where I just prefer “Piggy Bank”!

Just be sure to call or write and cancel the card, as opposed to just cutting it up and not using it.

It’s not always easy to avoid places like BoA. I’m in Canada, and don’t deal with them, but, wait! One of my CCs was taken over by them, so now I’m a customer whether I like it or not.

I’m going to close that account soon anyway.

Pre-approved? PRE? What the devil is THAT supposed to mean? Is it like being a “little bit” pregnant? I know the term is in common use, but it makes no sense. You’re either approved, or you ain’t approved. There’s no “pre.” Complete tripe, utter nonsense.

And another thing: All those “Information about Your Account” mailings I get from the CC companies. There’s no information about my account in there; what’s in there is a sheet of checks I can use for “extra” cash (whatever “extra” is supposed to mean) or to payoff some other card. Extra cash – is that like “spare” change; the annoying extra money you have lying around. Of course, if I use one of those check -bang! Here comes the 3% fee off the top, which is equivalent to a rate of twice as much on a declining balance. Idiots!

I hear your pain on b of a, however i have had b of a for several years and i have had my share of problems but i have always went directly to the bank and they have always fixed the problem. That is going personaly to the bank and letting the home town people handle the problem rather than through corporate (where we all know corporate always makes the problem bigger than it should be). So I will stay with b of a because of the hometown help they provide. Here in my town we have lots of banks but they do not provide the personal hometown help like wells fargo etc.

I think they passed a law banning most of these unscrupulous tactics. It takes effect either some time this year or next year. I wonder if it’s retroactive?

b of a is full of a……. is the general consensus of those who’ve used it in the past. They’re horrible, simple horrible; not just in terms of hidden fees, but in their gross lack of customer service!

I have to agree on the CC thing. I use mine for gasoline fill ups and that is it. Then pay it off. Now if I would just put the cash in my pocket each month and use that at the pump I would have no use for a CC. Although I found out that I could not have gotten any plane tickets if I would not of had a CC. Cash is a no no and checks and money orders too. They say that the CC is an extra form of ID for the passenger on the plane.

As I said, js, read “the fine print”—“pre-approved” apparently is actually defined as “we think you’re a living breathing person who might be able to fill out the paperwork for this card, and then MAYBE you’ll meet our secret criteria and be issued a credit card”. I even called the phone number on my rejection letter, to ask WTH was the basis for the denial—yes, I talked w/ a person, who had no clue why and didn’t care that my actual bank considers me one of its best customers, and said that all he could do was transfer my call to “customer service” which turned out to be a euphemism for the people who wanted me to put in for a secured card—not even the same company that I originally applied to and neither one was actually a part of my credit union. If my CU didn’t have such great interest rates on their consumer loans, I would be closing that account too, just because I’m so miffed that they’ve allowed their good name to be associated w/ this bunch of sheisters.

I always buy gas with a CC. Here in BC, the law is prepay at the pump only, so paying with cash is a hassle. How on earth do I know ahead of time, how much it will cost? Besides, I can swipe my CC and Air Miles card right at the pump and it’s fast and easy. Of course, it’s even easier to leave it until hubby takes it to town and fills it for me!
