I have made this for years. Neighbors bring there bottle over and I feel it for the cost of the bar soap. $2

Good post. With the crazy cost of items at the food market along with manufacturers sneaking in smaller sizes, this is a great money saving idea.

The way things are going we’re going to be washing our clothes in a stream and beating them with rocks, hanging them in bushes to dry.

Its going to get worse.

My mom used Fels Naptha on Pop’s clothes when he got them greasy or majorly stained. I have kept a bar around forever for the same reason. It’s a good product by itself. I think I’ll give this a try. Thanks, Tech Lover!!

If you don’t have the foaming container, buy one that already has foam soap in it. When that is finished, make your own with any liquid soap, shampoo or body wash.

The ratio of soap to water depends on your preference, and the strength of the soap. However, 40/60 or even 30/70 is adequate. (Another user says 1/5 soap to 4/5 water)

If you want antibacterial agent, use antibacterial lotion or liquid.

Bumping up.

My mom makes her own but I’ve not tried it. Not sure if this is the recipe she uses. I got a good deal on Purex with Zout so I’m stocked up for a while. But will keep this in mind for when I need detergent again.

Been using the powdered version of this for years. The clothes get clean, smell great and my bank account is solvent. I used a liquid form of this to wash my deck furniture upholstery. Wow, used a brush and all the stains disappeared.

When I was a kid my mom made homemade soap using waste kitchen fat and lye. We had the whitest clothes in the neighborhood without having to bleach. Of course she was a firm believer in rinsing twice and line drying in the sun too. I’ve never tried to make it her way cuz I’m scared to death to touch lye.

I used the use the White King laundry soap (real soap flakes) and it took everything out, even jello and grass stains without pre-treating. Then they stopped making it. Now I just grate up a bar of Fels Naptha and use about 1/4 – 1/3 of a bar and my clothes are all soft and nice smelling without being perfumey.

I like using dishwasher soap in my old foam soaper. I like making all my own soaps.

That is how I make mine. The only differnce is I use gallon sized plastic juice bottles to put mine in. The washing powder is a bit hard to find and something that you must have. Our walmart does not carry it. It you dont have a grater to grate the bar of soap. It will just take longer for it to dissolve. I dont put scents in them but I guess I could,

You can also find these tutorials on laundry detergent, sidewalk chalk, and other things as well as cooking tutorials on Youtube.com. Just search for “Making Homemade”. There are literally pages of them.

WHERE IS THE RECIPE FOR MAKING YOUR OWN LAUNDRY SOAP ?

Posted by miriamkay, Martinsville, IN. 2,349 total posts | Posted almost 2 years ago

Homemade Laundry Detergent Recipe

1 cup Washing Soda

1 cup bar soap, grated (I used Fels-Naptha. Other good options are Ivory soap, Sunlight bar soap, Kirk’s Hardwater Castile, and Zote. Avoid any highly perfumed soaps.)

1 cup Borax

1 quart boiling water

Large bucket: my suggestion is to get a 5 gallon paint bucket with a lid. This will keep the detergent free of dust and other particles between uses.

First, gather your ingredients. These can be found anywhere. I purchased mine at Walmart. The total cost for the ingredients should be less than $10, and each box of Washing Soda and Borax will make several batches of detergent.

Next, grate your bar soap. This will be the only “tricky” step of the process. I’m super lucky to have a friend with a magical machine that uber grates things, so it was very simple and quick for me. It’s completely fine to grate it by hand with a box cheese grater. This’ll take a bit of elbow grease.

Boil 1 quart of water on the stove, then add the grated soap one scoop at a time until completely dissolved.

Fill your bucket about halfway with hot water. I do this using my shower head. Then add the Borax and Washing Soda and stir well.

Stir in your melted soap mixture. Mix well. Fill bucket

I made this and its wonderful.
My clothes are like line fresh clean. LOL, as my stepdaughter says (who I shared the recipe with for her family) it doesn’t have a foo-foo scent, but they are very clean.

Love this recipe. My clothes have never been more clean and I have enough for all of us. Next time I’ll adjust it, but that could be years from now.

I just ran out of the grated bar soap with the fourth batch I made. I think I bought three bars of Fels Naptha to start.
