I don’t do freebees. I just include something with the purchase. That seems to work better for me and the customer likes it.

So sorry you had this happen and yes a lot of people will try to take advantage. But you are on a good site and the bonz guys are good at taking care of things like that so do not go through with the order afraid of feedback. The customer is being absolutely ridiculous expecting that many free things for a 7.00 purchase and we can all see that. For future reference though, like many of others have mentioned, send a free gift along with a purchase without mentioning it, customers love it and will tell their friends and family. It takes a while but am sure most know the best advertising is word of mouth.

I surprise buyers with freebies when I can, but don’t mention it in the listings .

I use to have free items listed in my booth until the sme thing happened to me. There is someone out there that is trying to get free stock. I too give out free items but no longer state what those items could be. There are bad or greedy buyers out there,

As I’ve already said before, I love the buy one get one free for what I sell. It works 99% of the time, and my customers like to choose their free books. Bonanza just needs to fix the cart, and sellers need to be very clear in their listings that it is an honor system. Freebies placed in the cart that exceed the buy one get one offer will not be shipped. If someone tries to take advantage, the items are easily relisted, and the buyer is blocked from ever purchasing again.

But if it worked correctly, the burden would not be on us to possibly antagonize the buyer by essentially suggesting that they were either an idiot or a scam artist – or that we ourselves were not on the up and up refusing to give them something the system clearly allows them to do!

This is not the way to win friends and influence people. At least, that’s my opinion.

Perhaps management should simply eliminate the freebee option entirely and not even offer it as an option?

How do you block a buyer?

I just removed all but one freebie from my booth, and that item is one that was grant-funded and cannot be sold.

Kind of sad, really.

I would not be happy if management eliminated the option! It does work well 99% of the time! Yes, it is the way to win friends, because nice people do not behave rudely. I’ve sent out over 1200 items here on bonanza since May 2011.

The same sort of thing happens in brick and mortor stores where people shoplift. Should the store be closed, or incentives stop because people shoplift? No. We just have to refuse to give in to bad behavior.

The ability to block a buyer who has clearly tried to take advantage of you is under Sell on Bonanza, Booth Options, Payment and Purchases, down at the bottom.

Interesting thread. BobbyPhoenix, did you hear back from customer support? Curious what they had to say about this.

Customer service basically said its more of an honor system than anything else. They can’t control the limit of what is put in the shopping cart whether freebie or not. They were helpful but it still doesn’t really explain having an option that is truly not functional.
The lady that helped did say that it is an issue that she would definitely bring up in the next support meeting.

Believe it or not there have been improvements to the freebie system. I think most of us selected the option, “one freebie with each item purchased.” I had several occasions, a while back, where the buyer tried to just “buy” the freebie.

In all cases I offered them the freeie at a price which included my cost of shipping, Bonz fee and PP fee. In one case the buyer walked. In another case the buyer paid. And in the third case the buyer found something to really buy.

Actually in the case where the buyer just paid for the freebie, the buyer had contacted me in advance and said she had been searching and searching for that item. She wanted to find something in my booth to buy but could not. She asked if I would sell it to her and at what price. We quickly came to an agreement.

About a year ago changes were made to disallow the “purchase” of just a freebie. Yours is the first case I’ve heard of in a long time where freebies were messed up again. :(

It seems like every time they do a site update, something totally unrelated to whatever “improvement” was made gets messed up. I think it’s absolutely ridiculous to create a bunch of features that are loaded with glitches and/or causing glitches in other areas of the site without repairing them. What good do these features do us when they’re not working properly or causing other features not to work properly? My dad is a programmer and he would never write a program without working out the problem areas before moving on to the next project.
