This vintage hummingbird brooch has beautiful pave set Swarovski Austrian crystals on the head of the bird, with a midnight black glass cabochon for the eye! The pin measures 2 1/8" long x 2" wide x 1" deep, up to the long golden beak. The detailing of the chest feathers is exquisite, and the brooch appears to be 22 K gold plated, as it just sparkles! The green and blue enameling on the wings and tail is just wonderful! The roll over clasp on the back works well, and marked on the back is ©D'Orlan. The only imperfection is the area on the back edge of the tail, where the gold tone is missing. This is a heavy weight, quality made, piece of costume jewelry!
Here is some history on the D'Orlan Jewelry Company:
Maurice J. Bradden, a tool and dye maker by trade, had managed a jewelry factory in Belleville, Ontario, Canada, that made Avon jewelry. In the mid 1950's, he met the well known New York jewelry designer Marcel Boucher, and became his protege. Maurice Bradden founded D'Orlan Jewelry in 1957, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Everything was designed at the factory, and the company was well known for high standards. Only the finest Austrian crystals, and Japanese glass stones, were used. I have seen the jewelry listed as 22 K gold plated. The D'Orlan line was distributed in 30 countries throughout the world. D’Orlan was also the worldwide manufacturer for “Lancel” and “Nina Ricci” fashion jewellery. (per oldlux.com, and rubylane.com)
