This is a vintage Pepto Mangan medicine bottle embossed “Pepto Mangan (Gude) – Contents 11 fluid ounces” dating to the early 1900s. The antique quack remedy bottle is a lovely shade of light aqua blue and has a unique, 6-sided shape.  The Cork top bottle (cork is missing) has an embossed mark on the bottom, possibly the number 17, but its difficult to make out.  My father, an avid bottle digger, found this bottle more than 40 years ago in the ruins of an old homestead in Virginia. The bottle is in great shape, free from cracks or chips. Embossing is sharp, clarity is very nice with the exception of a dirt stain in an upper corner from having been buried. Hopefully, the correct brushes and chemicals can clean the area. (See Photos)  The vintage medicine bottle measures 7.25” tall and 2.5” wide.

Pepto Mangan (Gude) was an early 1900s era remedy for “low blood” that proclaimed to increase levels of hemoglobin. It was produced by the M J Breitenbach Company of New York. It was well advertised and the name “Gude”, the German word for “good”, was likely chosen to enhance appeal. As early as 1905, medical journals of the day were slamming the company for deluding the public.
