WEDGWOOD Jasperware 1985 TAUPE Christmas Plate

Issued in 1985 by Wedgwood as the 17th plate in their limited edition Christmas series. Produced in taupe (soft brown) jasperware with a central scene of the Tate Gallery and a holly leaf border in white. The word “Christmas” and the date 1985 are embossed on the taupe background.

This rare TAUPE Christmas plate was produced for the Managing Director of Wedgwood, Sir Arthur Bryan as a Christmas gift for family friends in a very limited quantity – approximately 50 plates. The back is inscribed (in gold):

This plate is in a rare color, issued only in 1985-1986. With the Sir Arthur Bryan provenance, it would make a great addition to any advanced Wedgwood collection.

Central scene of the Tate Gallery, founded in 1897 as the National Gallery of British Art. It was later expanded to include Modern Art and became known as the Tate Gallery. In 2000, the museum collection was divided into four parts housed in four separate museums, and the building pictured on this is now known as Tate Britain. It holds the world’s greatest collection of British Art, including works by Blake, Constable, Gainsborough, Hockney, Hogarth, Moore, Rossetti, Spencer, Stubbs and Turner.

Diameter approximately 8.25 inches (21 cm), original issue price in 1985 for the regular 2-color edition was $80 – approximately $225 in 2023 dollars. (THIS special edition plate was never sold to the public so it had no Retail Price!) Fully marked on the back: WEDGWOOD - MADE IN ENGLAND
