This is a vintage hand painted plate from the Hotel Velazquez in Tanger, Morocco. The front features a bull and a Matador at a bullfight. The paint is a Sepia brown color and the picture is highly detailed.  The bull fighting scene is in the center and there is a gold border surrounding it on the edge of the plate. The plate measures approximately 4 ¾ inches in diameter and is ¾ of an inch deep.  On the front of the plate are written the words “Del Campol or Campos” and “Hotel Velazquez Tanger”. The back has the Number 28 on it. There was a Bullfighter by the name of Campos, but I don’t know if this is meant to be his name or not.

The city of Tangier is a city that was highly influenced by the Spanish Culture. The Plaza de Toros was a bullfighting arena that was built during the 1940s by the Spaniards and opened in 1950. The arena held up to 13,000 people who came to watch the Matadors from Spain and the local bullfighters compete with the bulls. It was one of only three arenas that existed in Africa. It stopped holding bullfights in 1970. This little dish was most likely provided to guests that stayed at the Hotel Velazquez Palace in Tangiers as a souvenir for those who attended the local bullfights. I don’t believe it was meant to be a butter dish since it is hand painted, it seems like a decorative piece only, but I could be wrong.

This plate is in excellent vintage condition as you can see by the many enlarged photographs. There are no chips or cracks in the plate. Please look at the photos as they are part of the description and show the condition better than I can describe.

This will be a nice addition to your collection of vintage Hotel Memorabilia, Bullfighting Souvenirs or Miniature Plates. It would be a nice little place to put coins, rings, and trinkets.
