Folk Art

This type of folk artwork was very popular in Mexico in the 1960s until the early 1980s. My parents purchased it on one of their trips. From what I have read, it was made by placing screen mesh into a mold. The reflective foil was added along with the flowers and then topped by glass. The bowl would be fired in a kiln where the heat seals everything together. This type of art was called pigskin glass because the pig skin was glued to the back to cover the burnt look from the kiln firing. Today instead of using real pig skin, the backs are usually painted black. It is similar in style to the Seetusee glassware from Canada from the 1960s, which was inspired by the Mexican painting on glass.

The Pansy and the small flowers and leaves appear to be real flowers, unless they are also made from pigskin to look like flowers, it is difficult to tell. The iridescent foil is in shades of bright gold and beige with the flowers in beige, brown and tan. The bowl measures 7 inches long and 5 inches wide. It is 1 inch deep. It has a pigskin leather backing and hanger. It is signed on the back Carmen Hecho Mexico 1984.

It is in excellent vintage condition as you can see by the pictures. There are no chips, cracks or separation of the backing. There are a few marks or stains in the leather on the back, which is normal for the age.  If you like unique artwork, this is for you. It is very beautiful and quite collectible. A wonderful addition to your collection of vintage Mexican Art.
