 Blue Eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium atlanticum)

Blue Eyed Grass is native to the Mid-Atlantic, coastal region. There are two kinds of Blue eyed Grass that grow here, this one is called the Eastern Blue Eyed Grass. The flower is a little larger and lighter blue that its cousin S. Angustifolium. This is one of my favorite mid spring plants, they are just adorable. They form clumps which you may divide in about two years for more plants. Although they are call a grass, they are actually members of the Iris family. The plant will come to you in a 3.5 inch pot. Soak thoroughly before planting. Water regularly until established.

Description: This is a short stout little plant, growing 8 - 12 inches. Flowers have six petal, which are blue with a yellow center.

Culture: Moist, well drained soil, not fussy about soil type, although these particular plants come from the NJ pinelands, so they are used to sandy, acid soil. Sun to part shade. Hardy zones 3 - 8. Bloom time mid spring.

Companion plants: Great with Eastern Wild Columbine, Evening Primrose

Wildlife Benefit: Nectar for butterflies, seeds for birds.

Eco-friendly grower

All of my plants are grown using earth friendly techniques, from seed collection to watering with rainwater. Pots are 100% recycled, some are re-used containers, others are made from recycled plastics. Plants are fed with PLANT-TONE by Espoma, an organic fertilizer and/or worm castings. I grow plants that can replace those lost to development in order to help sustain wildlife that depend on them. You can be assured that you are not getting plants from the wild, which is unethical and further contributes to habitat loss.

***Check my other listings. I am adding more wildlife-friendly native perennials everyday***
