Signed Ernst Geissendorfer, Original Colored Etching on Silk ca 1920-50

Ernst Geissendorfer was a serious and prodigious artist who owned a famous gallery /shop in Rothenburg. Rothenburg (now owned by which is now run by Catarina Geissendoerfer- the shop is just off the Marketplatz in the center of the town ) .) . Rothenbrug is a medieval walled town in southern Germany on the Romantic Road  and very popular among tourists.

Geissendorfer e painted many of the famous scenes in Rothenburg (and also created works from elsewhere in Germany, Europe and the United States.). Some of these can be purchased directly from the on Geisendorfer on- line store but not this one (you may want to visit the site for pricing info)

I can’t determine the title but it looks like Bavaria (his handwriting is difficult to read). Specialists and collectors would be able to ascertain this. I suspect it is at lest forty years old, and is done on silk.

Information about the artist:

Ernst Geissendorfer (1908 - 1993) Geissendorfer studid art in Nuremberg and mastered the art of etching. Very early in life he took over the art gallery business in Rothenburg (established 1908) from his parents. After extensive traveling throughout Europe he visited the United States for the first time in 1931. His etchings capture the true atmosphere of Rothenburg and are famous the world over for their high artistic skill. "

He also wrote and illustrated a small book for tourists called A GUIDE TO ROTHENBURG . The artwork that has been slowly surfacing are prints and etchings of the illustrations for that book.

Like this print they may be marked or signed " original run" or "original role", or perhaps just "original: as this is but I am uncertain because I not seen them. . Some of the prints are signed and some are not.

Image area is 4 x 6 inches and I presume the print is 8 x 6 inches.

Overall the frame is 9 x 11  Professionally matted and framed in bronze- gold tone contemporary metal with a wire hanger. Etching is signed in pencil. Item has been discounted by 50 %! Was $60.00!
