This vintage silver plate set was designed by the Danish Silversmith, Hans Jensen and bears his hallmark of “DENMARK” with a whale or a fish with raised tail. The Jensen company was formed circa 1900 according to the section on silver plate hallmarks on the website Pewter Tankards & Flagons. This set consists of a small hand held vanity purse mirror and a matching comb sheath with a tortoise shell comb. Both feature an ornate embossed repousse pastoral scene of people eating and drinking either at a festival, a tavern or a farm. This scene of country folk gathered has been referred to as “the Cracker Barrel Scene”. It includes a fiddle player, a barrel, dog and a hunting rifle in front of the dog on the ground. It looks like hunters returning from a hunt and celebrating with music and drink. This is very detailed as you can see by the enlarged pictures. This is most likely circa 1940s to 1950s and was made to look like vanity items from the Victorian era.

The mirror is marked Denmark on the front under the scene. The mirror has a nice beveled mirror on the inside. The handle on the mirror has ornate scroll work. The comb sheath is marked Denmark on the bottom edge.

The set is in excellent vintage condition as you can see by the enlarged photographs, and has a lovely original patina, it has not been polished. The beveled edge mirror is clear, no scratches, cracks or staining. The comb is original to the sheath and is complete with no missing teeth. The mirror measures approximately 4 ½ inches long by 2 ¾ inches wide and the comb sheath is 5 1/8 inches long by 6/16 of an inch wide.

This would make a great addition to your collection of vintage vanity items. It would look lovely on a dresser, perfect for that shabby chic look bedroom.
