Description: From the original description: [BROADWAY] ... And here from the balcony, from early morn to evening, the band sends forth its discords, heard at intervals above the roar and turmoil of the surging sea below. Just above the open space in front of the Astor, the City Park begins; a small enclosed tract with patches of turf surrounded by chains, a fountain, and the City Hall with the other municipal buildings. The place is hardly worthy of the name of Park, but in summer when the trees are in full leaf and the fountain is playing it is a pretty spot, and one that those accustomed to see daily, would be sorry to have destroyed. Some Vandals in the Common Council, lately proposed to restore it to its early state when Murray street ran through it; the same persons also endeavored to turn its southern point into a depot for the cars which ply in the Bowery and Third Avenue; but fortunately their schemes were defeated, and the Park is still left to us for some years longer. The City Hall is a handsome building of white marble, with a rear of brown free-stone, said to have been put there by the builders because the Hall was so far out of town, it was thought the back would never be seen by sufficient numbers to warrant the additional expense of constructing it of marble. The story is a good one, and speaks volumes for the sagacity of the early inhabitants. Some years ago, there was in the Park a building devoted to the purposes of a public gallery of Art. It was intended to form there a collection of paintings and statues, which should be accessible to the public on the payment of one dollar for each individual, a ticket so obtained constituting him a life-Member. The plan was never very vigorously carried out, and received so little support from the people, that it was flnally abandoned, leaving us without any permanent gallery. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Martin2001 Satisfaction Guaranteed Policy ! TURKEY Trebizond on Black Sea - 1887 Wood Engraving

This old engraving has substantiated and stimulated a recent interest of mine; this physical thing now hangs in front of my reading chair, and I have found the digital copy of the charming old book from which it was cut (VOYAGES AND TRAVELS OR SCENES IN MANY LANDS VOLUME
de Colange, Leo (Ed.)).
Published by E.W. Walker, Boston, MA (1887))
I recommend enjoying some of the 19th century paintings under "Trabzon in art" in commons.wikipedia., which is where I first discovered this one. In some of these it is the artists viewpoint of serious (not ) peacefulness that I especially enjoy, and now this is substantiated, in front of my reading chair.
