The Willowdale Handcar: Or the Return of the Black Doll by Edward Gorey 1962 First Edition, Bobbs-Merrill Company, Inc., Indianapolis New York. Softcover, unpaginated (64 pages). In this enigmatic, surreal, wonderfully entertaining tale, three mysterious figures set out from Willowdale, traveling by handcar. On the way to nowhere in particular they pass a number of odd characters and observe a series of baffling phenomena, from a house burning down in a field to a palatial mansion perched precariously on a bluff. At once deeply vexing and utterly hilarious, darkly mysterious and amusingly absurd, The Willowdale Handcar is vintage Edward Gorey. Illustrated with 30 drawings by the author. First Edition/1st Printing (Toledano A10a) in tan wraps with 1.50 cover price. On publisher's page: "A somewhat more explicit version of this book appeared in HOLIDAY under the title THE IMPRUDENT EXCURSION. Library of Congress Catalog Card No. 62-17515 Copyright 1962 by Edward Gorey, Printed in the United States of America" Edward Gorey was a great macabre illustrator and storyteller, unique in his own way and certainly deserving to be represented here in The Black Lodge. Later reprints of this book aren't so hard to find, but the 1962 original can be a challenge. I'd like to say this book is in Near Fine condition because the flaws are so minor in my opinion- tiny lower front cover corner bump; strip of slightly darker shading near spine on covers; a couple of ultra-light cover spots. No marks, inscriptions or other writing, price stickers, etc. Some stickler-collectors might disagree with the Near Fine rating but when you compare copies in similar condition going for over 100.00, I don't think there can be any complaints. Personally, I don't care if this little book doesn't sell for a year or more. It's just too cool! 5 3/4" x 6"
