Georg Schmider Zell am Harmersbach Germany and 25 similar items
More details about this itemThis is a charming earthenware pitcher from the company of Georg Schmider of Zell am Harmersbach Germany. Zell am Harmersbach is a small town that lies between the Rhine and the Black Forest. It was the home of several pottery companies. From what I could glean on an internet search, the company closed in 1963. This vintage pitcher features the popular Schmider Rooster and Hen pattern. The background color is a cream tone which leans slightly towards a very pale yellow. There are hand painted green scallops at the top and bottom. Below the black rooster and hen figures is a wide band of lighter green. The pitcher stands 8.75” high and is 6.6” from lip to outer edge of its handle. The base measures 4.75” in diameter. The bottom bears the Georg Schmider “S” within “G” trademark with Zell above and am Harmersbach below. Below the trademark is the word handgemalt which is German for hand painted. There is also a number stamped in ink and this is illegible. There is an incised number 4536 also seen on the bottom. This wonderful pitcher is in very good condition and is free of chips or cracks. There is age-related crazing of the glaze but the glaze has retained its clarity and gloss. The best part of this pitcher is the raised thumb hold on the handle which will afford a secure hold and assure slip free serving. Shipping weight will be 3 lbs.
