This vintage cloche is a work of art. There is very beautiful and intricate folded silk faille ribbon work, handsewn, covering almost one entire side of the hat. The hat itself is made of loosely woven raffia, with tucks and rolls taken in for a better fit to the head. It has a 6.5" diameter, and the inside band measures 19 inches in circumference. The crown is 5 inches with a 1 inch brim.
Opposite the ribbon work, the other side of the cloche has an Art Deco Rhinestone Hatpin with a Black Enamel and 48 stone Chevron design. It is made of white metal. The very point of the pin has been broken off, but this hat has a loose weave, making the pin fit easily through. It measures 1 inch wide X 2.625 inches tall.
The hat is in excellent vintage condition on the outside, however, the silk interior is fairly worn, and at the top it is almost completely worn out. It could be replaced if you prefer. The lining around the inside band has been tacked down, but is in good condition, with one spot that has some soiling. It is shown in the next to last photo.
The hat comes packed in a cardboard Famous Barr Department Store hatbox that is 12 inch square. Although it is not original to the hat, it does have age on it. I estimate it to be from the 1940's era. This does provide protection for your hat from dust, sun and other factors that would be detrimental to an antique such as this.
