Made by the J H Day Company of Cinncinati, Ohio in the 1870's and patented in 1874 and 1878 is this cast iron kettle known as a safety kettle. It dimensions are 8H x 10W inches or 15H x 15W including the handles. The handles are both swing bale type with wooden turned grips. The pot or kettle weighs 10 pounds and hold 3 gallons. The handle of the front safety cover over the pouring spout; is held on by a cotters pin (missing) a steel pin in it's place, and two flanged extensions of the cast iron appendix that fit into the base of the pot. The Cast iron safety front has embossed in the casting; J H DAY & Co, CINTI' OHIO, Pat 74 & 78, 7. The pour spout on the kettle is an inverted 3 inch cutaway arch. The cooking vessel is three footed with a bellied bottom. The inside is a rough pitted but clean surface.
