Measures 6 inches tall. Has three chips, one in side, one on bottom lip, and one on the top of the handle. Overall piece is aged and wear to the silver and gold paint. Signed in gold on the bottom, look like some of the mark may be missing and the Shimazu mon or the cross with circle is painted in relief around the neck of the vase. Please see photos. Looks older than Meiji but style and marks appear to indicate that period.Top edge is decorated with crosses with circles. Chip on the side is deep and shows pottery not porcelain as the color goes all the way through the material which is thicker than porcelain. The silver and gold are applied. It has an appeal to it.
Thank you to - gotheborg.com for the following information.
The circle with a cross that often makes up a part of the marks, are the Shimazu mon or the family crest of the clan that ruled Satsuma Han however I doubt that any of the Shimazu clan ever owned a Satsuma export style ware piece. If that were to be the case, the crest would in that case need to be blue, since that was also the Shimazu clan colors.
Satsuma was produced in Kagoshima, Kyoto, Tokyo, Osaka, Kobe, and Kanazawa by hundreds of known artists, in many styles and by literally thousands of unknown decorators. Meizan has pieces authenticated as being done in Kanazawa (Kutani). For most of the "Zan brothers" nothing is known, in spite of very good quality work and many good studio pieces are simply unmarked.
Please also notice that the authenticity of many of the more important marks below are uncertaintom lip and one on top of the handle. Wear to the silver paint on the handles and to the gold paint on the bottom. Signed in gold on bottom.
