Antique Paye Baker Sterling Silver Rabbit Bib Clips
P B Hallmarked
This charming antique child's Bib Clip or child's Sweater Guard /Clips is marked on the back of both clips with the maker's initials; “P B” and “STERLING”. The P, B and the symbol are each inside a heart. P B stands for Paye Baker, a company from North Attleboro, Massachusetts. The Company was in existence from 1891 to 1930 so that helps to date this bib clip. I would imagine this dates to the late 1800s to early 1900s. The rabbit looks like the White Rabbit illustrated in Alice in Wonderland, which was written by Lewis Carroll in 1865. It also could be Peter Rabbit from Beatrix Potter's book, which was a huge success by 1903. This precious bib clip features a rabbit wearing a jacket and a bow tie, I will leave it up to you to decide which rabbit it depicts. Bib clips were used to hold a bib in place or to make a bib from a handkerchief or any other cloth that happened to be handy. The chain would go around the back of the baby's neck.
This is in very good vintage condition with a lovely old patina to it. I think you can see the wear clearly in the pictures. I did not polish or clean this sterling silver piece as many people prefer the old patina that comes only with age. The piece measures approximately 6 3/4 inches from end to end. Each Clip is 3/4 of an inch long and 1/2 inch wide. The clips are joined by a silver link chain. It weighs .3 ounces on my postage scale, which converts to 8.50 grams. The springs on the clips work just fine and function properly.
This would make a unique gift for a baby shower or a perfect addition to your collection of vintage and antique baby bib clips. I'm sure this was meant to be a family heirloom cherished from one generation to the next. These are rare, I have not seen another one like it in all the searches I have done.
