Approximately 60,000 Germans immigrated to Pennsylvania between 1727 and 1775, many of them toting their belongings in chests. Throughout this period, the lift top lid chest was one of the earliest forms of furniture. It maintained its status as one of the most important storage items in rural southeastern Pennsylvania homes well into the 1800s. This simple but functional piece of furniture was slowly phased out as the new English chests of drawers came into vogue. Chests were the ultimate in utilitarian domestic objects, as they were used as a substitute for everything from beds to tables, in addition to storage.
