this primitive hay tool is a hay spade. It weighs 5 pounds, stands 39 inches tall, 8 long and 9 wide due to curved handle. It is from approx. the 1750s, when hay was stacked not rolled or baled; the pile compressed and the user stepped on the iron projection and the inner sharpened blades cut a section out of the stack. It is of handforged steel for 22 inches with a 3 inch step projection and an 8 inch span of 6 inch long blades. the wood is hand carved oak with a 2.5 inch diameter and curved for strength and leverage. These hay spades/knives are rare to come by in such great condition.
