More about this item

a large fern table, or parlor / foyer table, tavern table from the early 20th century, made between 1926 and 1931, post Arts-n-Crafts movement, in old European or Spanish Mission style, with 'oversize' turned legs and squared feet, clearly high-end manufacture, possibly made and furnished for a hotel, office, or other business or institutional setting. It is of very high-grade and fine make, much more so than average. The label is not the maker, but rather a distributor of all kinds of items the most fashionable and prestigious hotels, restaurants, clubs, shops and retail establishments, steamships and railroads, hospitals and office buildings used to furnish their settings. This combination of the name with both Pick and Barth began in 1926, and was changed again in 31, so we can date the table to that period. During that time, the straight lines of what most people know as Mission furniture had become passe- it would be more accurate to say that this piece is after the arts-n-crafts movement, but in the arts-n-crafts style or flavor. A fancier more elaborate look reminiscent of old European castles and Spanish colonial missions was en vogue which still had major elements of mission design. This was especially popular for use in offices, hotel lobbies, and other public places, and that's probably how this table came to be. The firm did absorb several furniture manufacturers in 1928, so to say they were not the maker may not be entirely true.... Pick-Barth may have actually owned the maker of the piece at that point! If it was ever sold to the general public, it would only have been at the very best of their stores in one of the major cities, because the quality level of this one far surpasses anything a small-town or suburban furniture store would have offered at this time. This piece is as desirable for its historical significance to furniture design and manufacture as it is for its utility and beauty. For any collector or fan of 20th century furniture, a real find!

Beautifully crafted, great lines! Strong angle to the legs, with large well defined turnings, and the thick cross-stretchers close to the floor, classic arts-n-crafts! Feels like it's right out of the Spanish colonial mission.....

This piece is deceptively large and heavy- the pics don't do it justice. The oak is thick and solid, no veneer, built like a tank.... Check out the bottom of the feet- thick solid oak.

Gorgeous original dark finish.

Nice patina, very slight wear around the edges....

original retailer's label is on the underside, Albert Pick-Barth, which was an upscale department store furnishing high-end goods to both residential and commercial clients.

Top has a couple marks, but nothing serious. One seem between the boards is not quite aligned properly- seems to have simply aged this way. Possibly repairable, but maybe one of those things best left alone....

Great look, incredible quality, best you will find, construction quality is similar to Limbert, Stickley, and other major labels of that era, but the piece is not marked. With some more in depth research in time, you may be eventually be able to track this great piece back to its maker and even its original owner.
