The Pin Oak tree is among the most widely planted native oaks in the urban landscape, the third most common street tree in New York City. It tolerates drought, poor soils and is easy to transplant. The green, glossy leaves turn a brilliant red to bronze in the fall. It is most commonly found in northeastern United States and southeastern Canada.
Onyx is chalcedony quartz mined in Brazil, India, California, and Uruguay. Multi-colored raw onyx may be found worldwide, but is found most in Brazil. It may be brown, white, grey or black, although the color most commonly associated with onyx is black. The name comes from the Greek word onyx, which means nail of a finger or claw. Legend says that one day while Venus was sleeping Eros/Cupid cut her fingernails and left clippings scattered on the ground. Because no part of a heavenly body can die, the gods turned them into stone, which later became known as onyx.
