Cabinet photo. PARIS OPERA (Palais Garnier - Opera de Paris - Opera Garnier). The card is light-weight stock, cream-colored on both sides with rounded corners and a double edge rule - measures 4-1/4 x 6-5/8". Uncredited. Undated - late 1800s, and probably about 1880. The back has a penciled inscription in English identifying the building.
This is aa fine architectural view of the original Paris Opera (Palais Garnier), on the Place de L'Opera in Paris, France. The building opened in 1875 and was named the Academie National de Musique, which is the name on the building in this view.
On the street to the left of the building is a large covered horse-drawn vehicle. We can see no other vehicles or people in this view. The focus and contrast are quite good. All the features of the card, photo, and presentation strongly suggest a date around 1880 for this card.
CONDITION: Very Good. The card is slightly age-yellowed and has a small chip to the lower right corner. The photo surface has one long scuff visible when the image is viewed at a slant, but it is otherwise in quite good shape.
