More about this item

This is an 1840s to 1850s Cairns and Brothers of NY, leather ventilated firefighters helmet. It is in great shape. Minimal to no leather cracking on the 1/4 inch leather. There is an embossed pattern in the leather around the front brim, down the curled sides and around the long rear brim or beavertail. the panel of the dome have embossed V's and patterned diamonds embossed in each of the 8 sections. It is all original with no hole or replacements. There are 4 tall combs of which the 2 lateral ones have originally made holes throught the combs near the apex. There are 4 rolled ridges between the combs for rigid reinforcement. The gold gilting on the eagle is wearing. The eagle is intricately feathered and still well attached with no tears or denting. The eagles beak and 4 brass rivets hold the ridgid leather id shield or badge in place. The shield is black with a gray or silver large leather number 1. The red leather bar has a C and is missing the other two letters below the one. The town name on the top of the sheild is Wandowenock. This is a New York town or area of Queens from what the family history tells me by the items at the estate sale. Inside the helmet at the apex is the Cairns round brass makers logo plate. There is also a Cairns logo brass bar or plate on the inside front brim. The helmet is marketed as ventilated. The cloth band is tan and intact, but no size marker is present. It measures 21.5 inches around the inner brim; which I believe is a size 8. This helmet has not been abused, crushed, melted, or repaired. It is authentically original.
