Plot Synopsis: Captain America #101
Guest-starring the Red Skull and Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. An old-fashioned Cap-style slugfest starts this sophomore issue of the Star-Spangled Avenger's solo '60s series. Although filled with super-spy activity that was all the rage in the James Bond-obsessed '60s, the plot here draws on deep roots reaching back to World War II.
After the war, the Red Skull had awakened three Sleepers -- ultra-powerful war machines designed to avenge the death of Hitler and hail the return of the Third Reich (see Tales of Suspense #72, #73 and #74). Now, like a recurring disease, the Skull returns with a new Sleeper, more powerful than any of its predecessors. But can even the Skull control this dreadnought of doom? Or will he be trapped with Captain America, helpless to halt the end of the world?
Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the powerhouse duo who almost singlehandedly built the Marvel Universe from scratch, cast Captain America into impossible situation after impossible situation. Each time the Sentinel of Liberty proves why he's worthy to wear the flag into combat. Syd Shores inks Kirby's pencils with panache, providing a very nostalgic feel for Cap that harkens back to his early days of the 1940s. This one is adrenalyne charged from front to back.
