I called the gem stone "like Alexandrite" in the title because I wanted you to read about this exquisite necklace and most people do not recognize the name Corundum. If this choker collar does not take your breath away please feel free to return it. However, once you see it you will not want to part with it. This necklace is stunningly beautiful no matter what stones have been used. You are maybe wondering why I started a description of such a wonderful necklace in that manner. Hopefully what follows explains all.
Color change Alexandrite is the most expensive gem stone currently on the market (approx. $2,500 per carat). So when we had a chance to purchase some we knew it was not THE Alexandrite. We purchased it for the same reason you have been kind enough to read this far, it is exquisite no matter the official name of the main stone. The color change of these stones is breath taking. In indoor lighting and at night the color ranges from a red-violet to a near-amethyst deep purple color. The light show continues in daylight but the colors are more of a blue-violet flash. To get the full effect of the dramatic color change rotate the stone to get the color from all facets and to look for the "flash" (blazes of color that show in the body of the stone). This necklace is graced with exceptional faceting that causes the light show to intensify that much more.
These stones are more than likely synthetic corundum spiked with trace elements to punch up the color change. The reason I do not believe it to be zandrite (a special type of glass used in gem stone simulants) is because that typically has a green cast to better match the true Alexandrite which has a blue-green in daylight and purplish-red under incandescent light.
This necklace is lovely and you will enjoy the brilliance as it graces your neck. The color flashes are kept in check by bands of sterling silver.
The physical measurements of this statement piece are a choker/collar adjustable 14-1/2 inches to 15-1/2 inches in length. a center portion length of 1-3/8 inches, the width of dangle at the bottom is 1/2 inches, and a thickness of 5/16 inches. The weight is an outrageous 3.95 ounces (112 grams). There has to be almost 3 ounces of sterling silver in this beauty.
There is one thing you do need to take my word on. That's the fact that the color explosions will mesmerize you.
