LIGHTING...
...from Kitsch-n-Kaboodle!!
a hanging chandelier double pendant ceiling fixture, dating to the 1930s, made of solid and stamped brass, with two ball globes hanging from either side of a ceiling medallion, 100% professionally restored to as-new condition, with modern wire and electricals, polished to a high shine, just as it would have looked when new 80 years go, and ready for installation and use in the modern home, office, or business.
The Main Fixture: This most unusual fixture is a bit of a cross between foyer light and chandelier. It was made in the 1930s, as is evident by the 30s elegant styling, the exaggerated socket bells, and the center finial. A smaller single-light version of this fixture is common to find on the market, and consists of a small circular flat-pan dish, with central chain extending to one globe beneath, only about a foot or less deep. You may have seen this little one-light version in stores, or here on line. This one here is the more advanced upgraded full-size model of that, much fancier, more substantial, and extremely scarce to find.
You will note the lack of the old-fashioned turn-key sockets, which began to disappear following the invention of the wall switch in 1926. This helps date the piece later, after the more common 3- or 4- light dish-pan models.
These socket bells also help, in that they are two-part forms, a top & bottom, soddered together around the rim. Earlier models, even those of the larger size globes, have bells of thinner gauge metal that is stamped of one piece of brass, with no seams. These are much better made than the earlier ones, and seem to display later more advanced metal manufacture. The seam between top & bottom is brilliantly hidden in the form of the bell. No turn-keys or holes provides sleeker styling. And they are free of the stress-cracks that you often find around the rims of the earlier, thinner pieces made in the teens & 20s.
The main form on this one is similar to the dish-pan models of earlier years, but combines the large pan with the little cup they hung from on those earlier models. Instead of the main pain hanging down from a smaller cup, it is right against the ceiling, at the top, with a large and highly ornate central bell form, terminating in a long fancy solid-brass filigreed finial, and the socket bells with globes hang down directly from ceiling, from either side of the pan. You will note also those long rectangular chains of earlier have been replaced by sleeker oval chain, with smaller links, and thicker gauge. We refused to allow our craftsman to replace this wonderful chain with the cheap thin knock-off chandelier chain the modern light companies and hardware stores are selling. It just would have ruined the piece! We were insistent on retaining 100% authenticity on this one especially, as that gauge chain has such an impact on the design quality. I've included a comparison photo below to show you the difference.
The main parts of the fixture are so simple and elegant, extremely well made. The gauge of the parts, and their weld is finer crafted than the more common and earlier models that you often find on the market. The look is striking and different. The effect of placing the pan at the top, with the super-long expanse of these sleek little links leading to the over-size exaggerated bell fitters and oval globes is so dramatic!
The parts are really well made. Note the extra fine detail of the filigree on the finial. That is one finely crafted and heavy chunk of solid brass! Super piece! We love it!
The Globes: The globes are not original, but are completely identical to what it originally had. They are high quality reproductions, and are identical to the original globes that were on the piece when we acquired it. When found, it had only one of the original two globes remaining, and that one was badly cracked. Luckily the same globes, with their simple, classic form, and standard fitter size, are being made again, and we were able to find identical replacements to maintain the authentic original appearance of this great fixture!
