[RARE ART NOUVEAU DOULTON BURSLEM SIGNED HAND PAINTED VASE or BRUSH HOLDER:
RARE KELMSCOTT PATTERN, WILLIAM MORRIS!!!!
This is a stunning vase executed by the very best in Doulton Burslem, in a typical KELMSCOTT PATTERN, AFTER WILLIAM MORRIS. Art Nouveau floral hand painted design in muted greens, yellows, blues and black contouring. It is fully marked with maker's stamped mark, incised number, gold initials and what seems to be the registration number. WE KNOW IT TO BE VERY VERY RARE, AND WE THANK A FELLOW ER FOR GIVING US THE INFORMATION ON THIS AMAZING ITEM!
The vase is composed of white porcelain, with elongated amphora shape with a flared rim, bearing a decoration of flowers, leafs and other organic shapes. Probably the work of Fred Hancock. The vase displays maker's trademark on base in transfer printed image in dark green of a crown surmounting irregular circle shape, with the text DOULTON BURSLEM encircling central motif of four interlooping 'D's, and text reading 'England' below. Maker's number inscribed on base and the following transfer stamp: KELMSCC No. 3478 and a faint digit following these (a 9?) No. 37487 underneath Also an incised number digit 10, and gold initials handwritten in gold.
Condition: The vase is intact apart from the flared rim, which on one side had clear clean breaks and was re-glued. The opposite side of the rim sees more damage. One piece was reglued, but about 2 inches of the upper rim was chipped away and was hand painted or dyed in what appears to be green acrylic. The rim can be restored or left as is. Measurements: 6" tall, about 5.5" at widest point; base diameter: 2.2"
