DESCRIPTION
This collectible - absolutely super thin, translucent teacup & saucer set was produced during the early 20th Century in Japan, prior to WWII - possibly earlier.
This fine vintage teacup is a fine translucent bone china, with 12 twisted raised areas that swirl around the inside of the teacup and push up into to the mouth in sharp edge columns that are accented with gold on a cinnabar background. This swirl design and edge detail is mirrored in the matching saucer. The china teacup is overlayed in several mountain and garden scences - completely handpainted. 6 pointed star-shaped leaves in brown and rust. Rusty cinnabar (red) blossoms with gold stamens are sitting upon a bed of delicately painted leaves.
Blue mountains with olive green trees shading some thatched roofed sunning huts next to a stream, river or lake. There is a scene - looking at a waterfall through fall colored leaves that appear to be in motion - moving in the soft breeze. A Mother and Child in repose - they appear to be speaking to each other. The Child is in its Mother's embrace upon a gold tatami mat with red trim, They rest quietly in this beautiful scenery next to a stream, river or lake with trees and a large blue mountain in the distance. THE DETAIL IN THEIR KIMONOS IS ASTOUNDING! Peach and soft green; the draping is painted in thin black detail with gold patterns in the folds of their kimonos. All of this wonderful handpainted detail is sitting timelessly upon a translucent white porcelain. And to top it off the teacup has a bowed Bamboo-textured handle in a rich cinnabar.
The saucer has a very detailed edge (matches teacup) in the precise stripe (representing rain?) and circle (representing clouds? ) pattern in gold on cinnabar. The saucer has the same raised swirl detail in the porcelain as the teacup. The swirls give the saucer scene a dream appearance as the swirl makes its way up to the edge of the piece. The well blended pattern continues with the same painted details of the cup upon a pure white Japanese porcelain background. We believe this to be a much earlier piece than cataloged.
