General Robert E. Lee
Robert E. Lee was born in 1807 in Virginia and educated at the U.S Military academy at West Point. He graduated second in his class in 1829, and achieved the rank of Captain by 1838. He distinguished himself in the Mexican War and later became superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. As Commander of the Department of Texas in 1860, he was summoned to Washington DC when the war between the States seemed imminent. President Lincoln offered him the field command of the Union Forces, but Lee declined, feeling his loyalties too much bound up with the Southern cause. Three days after Virginia seceded from the Union in April of 1860. Lee resigned his command of U.S. Forces. A year later he took command of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia and then in 1865, He was made Commander-in-Chief of all Confederate armies. Two months later the was was virtually ended by his surrender to General Grant at Appomattox Court House. Lee's masterly strategies were overcome only by the superior resources and troop strength of the Union forces, and are still studied in Military academies as models of strategy and tactics.
