General Ulysses S. Grant
Ulysses S. Grant, the son of Ohio pioneers, entered the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1839 and upon graduation, planned a career in teaching. Instead he was ordered join the southwestern border forces struggling against Mexico. He was later transferred to the California coast and , in 1854, he resigned from the military and returned to his family in the Midwest. After a series of unsuccessful businesses enterprises, Grant applied to serve as an officer at the outbreak of the Civil war. He led his largely volunteer troops through a series of victories and was eventually named Major General of volunteers. Although he suffered a costly and humiliating defeat at Shiloh, he went on to win an important victory at Vicksburg on the some day in 1863 as Union forces won the battle of Gettysburg. The Civil War ended in 1865 at Appomattox Courthouse with the surrender of General Lee. Grant was elected President of the United States and, in spite of constant scandal and financial instability, he was elected to s second term by a large majority of the popular vote. After his retirement, he wrote his Civil War Memoirs, a work often described as one of the great war commentaries of all time.
