Essiac is rapidly becoming a household word when it comes to alternative cancer treatments, detoxification, immunity, a general health tonic or just a pleasant cup of herbal tea. Essiac tea has earned a reputation as a natural approach to fight cancer because the herbs used in the Essiac formula have been eaten safely as food since time immemorial. However, one does not have to have cancer to drink Essiac tea. Essiac tea is now taken by many people for the purpose of maintaining good health and for preventive measures against many common ailments.

Essiac was discovered among the Ojibway Indians in 1922. Essiac tea is made with herbs. The primary herbs in the Essiac formula are Sheep Sorrel, Burdock Root, Slippery Elm Bark and Rhubarb Root.

Essiac Preparation

Supplies Needed: One stainless steel kettle with lid (or glass); stainless steel sieve; large stainless steel or wood stirring utensil; stainless steel funnel or 2-cup glass measuring cup. Glass bottles for storage (may be amber, colored or clear glass). Bottles and lids should be sterilized. Distilled water. Do not use anything made of aluminum.

Preparation:

1. Measure out desired amount of dry ingredients.

1 cup herb mix plus 2 gallons of water equals about 224 liquid ounces of tea.
1/2 cup herb mix plus 1 gallon of water equals about 112 liquid ounces of tea
1/4 cup herb mix plus 1/2 gallon of water equals about 56 liquid ounces

2. Pour proportionate amount of water into pot and bring water to a rolling boil with the lid on.

3. Stir dry ingredients into boiling water. Replace lid and continue boiling at a reduced heat for 10 minutes.

4. Turn off stove and scrape down sides of pot. Stir mixture thoroughly. Replace lid. Let pot sit and cool undisturbed for 12 to 24 hours.

5. Reheat ingredients to steaming hot but do NOT boil. Turn off heat and allow herbs to settle for a few minutes. Pour hot liquid through sieve to catch sediment.

6. Use a funnel to fill sterilized bottles and put lids on. Allow bottles to cool. Store in a dark, cool place and always refrigerate an opened bottle. Do not freeze or microwave.

Directions:

1 ounce of Essiac tea two times per day, diluted in 2 ounces of hot water. Food should not be eaten within one hour before/after drinking the tea. Drink at least 6-8 glasses of water per day. First dose should be upon rising; last dose before bedtime.

As a daily tonic or to enhance the immune system, take oe an ounce one time per day diluted in one ounce hot water. Drink at least 6-8 glasses of water per day.
