Firmin Didot. Condition: 1 (1. Excellent - 2. Very good - 3. Good - 4. Fair) Overall uniform very light age toning of paper. Dimensions: 7.5 x 8.5 inches, including blank margins (borders) around the image. Paper weight: 3 (1. Thick - 2. Heavier - 3. Medium heavy - 4. Slightly heavier - 5. Thin) Reverse side: Blank Notes: Green color around the print in the photo is a contrasting background on which the print was photographed. 1 inch = 2,54 cm. Legend to the illustrations in the print: TWENTY YEARS AFTER THE DUKE OF BELLEGARDE had set the fashion for the royal court, two other men ruled style. These were Montauron, in 1644, and, later, Candale. They were last of those whom the English called "the lions" - that is, individuals who on their own were able to define and name fashions and persuade others to adopt them. However, after 1648 the caprices of costume were no longer named eponymously and innovations in fashion were taken from the king. With the disappearance of Candale the reign of the "lions" was over. By the same token, the sleeves were left open to show off the under-shirt. The gentleman to the far right is wearing similar clothes, though of a different colour. In this case, however, the cloak has taken on a more military aspect. 2 A gallant, wearing the short, puffed breeches that were fashionable during the reign of Henri IV. However, details such as the baldric, silk stockings and small boots date this costume back to the reign of Henri III. 3 4 The wife and niece of the Marshal of Guebriant. The former is wearing a very decollete dress, and her open neck is covered by a white fichu ready for a trip to town. This is attached to a large collar turned down over her shoulders like a cape. The black gown shows that she is in mourning. Apart from the absence of a widow's mantle her niece is similarly dressed, except that her costume is rich and colourful. 6 Louis XIV in 1660, and 8 Louis in 1670. In the first illustration he is still cultivating the appearance of casual undress of which Candale was the principal instigator. The doublet is exaggeratedly short and the belt has been lowered, so the underclothes can be seen hanging out above the hose. Children in the street used to shout: "Look out, sir, your trou-ers are falling down!". The first costume, worn when Louis was only 22, shows the influence of Mazarin and his regulations - there are no gold or silver trimmings. Neither trimmings, nor the "royal jacket" - blue with a red lining and magnificent embroidery - could worn by others without a royal warrant. 7 Maria Theresa of Austria in 1660. I recommend enjoying some of the 19th century paintings under "Trabzon in art" in commons.wikipedia., which is where I first discovered this one. In some of these it is the artists viewpoint of serious (not ) peacefulness that I especially enjoy, and now this is substantiated, in front of my reading chair.
