This piece was a badge given for volksporting event.

Volkssporting literally translates as "sport of the people."  Volkssports are organized, non-competitive events designed to appeal to people of all ages.  They are not tests of speed or endurance, but light exercise. The volkssporting philosophy simply recognizes that everyone cannot and should not attempt to exercise in timed or competitive events where awards are based on order of finish.  Since events are non-competitive, participants travel at their own pace, thus making this an excellent outdoor recreational activity for the entire family.

A volkssporting event is usually a walk (volksmarch) through a scenic and/or historic area over a predetermined route and distance. A planned event normally has a badge or pin with a medallion that commemorates completion of the event depicting the theme, location, or honoree of the event. Volkssporting originated in southern Germany during the early 1960s and is as popular today as it was back then.

These huge medallions are great to pin up on a flag hanging, or hang in framed pictures.
Some collectors recycle them (remove the pin and chain parts) and convert them into large
holiday tree ornaments.  Others mount them on plaques near their walking / hiking sticks to
decorate a wanderlust room.  Have fun - use your creativity to create the look you want.
