Matching pair of fireplace accessories known as andirons, of exceptional quality and unusual design in a highly streamlined Hollywood art deco style. It is uncertain exactly how old these are- with their chrome tops and brushed steel, they certainly recall the eras of big chrome encrusted fenders. We suspect possibly they are from the 30s, 40s, or 50s.
Moreover, they show signs of being hand-made, artisan crafted. The welds, and the way the brushed steel is crimped around an iron frame, showing on the backsides and undersides some tiny variation in the edges and tool marks. They do not look mass-produced to me, and I suspect these may have been custom-made by an artist. Other than that, there is little information on them. And they are completely unmarked.
The brass bolt heads really cap off the look I think. They were just encrusted with dirt and debris when I got them, so we know at least they were well used, well loved, and then stored for a very long time. I took them to a professional metal worker conservator, and I paid a fair amount to have them properly cleaned and polished.
One of them has a very slight lean- I don't know if this is damage or in the original make itself. But I was afraid to try to take them apart and do anything about it. I think when they are on display in a fireplace, with a foot of space in between them it is not so noticeable. I fear it's opening a can of worms to try to repair it, so I had the restoration expert stick to outer surfaces only, and leave all else well enough alone!
*** They do not fold flat, like modern mass-produced andirons, and as a result must be shipped in their 'set-up' position. I'm not charging shipping anyhow, but please keep in mind when factoring a fair bid price- the shipping box may be larger than you would otherwise anticipate.
