The Australian Blue Fire Opals in this gorgeous necklace are a doublet. A doublet is when a gem stone is made of 2 layers. The top layer is the beautiful deep fire opal and the second or bottom layer is fused to the opal in order that the opal be more durable. This process in no way diminishes the beauty of the opal. This practice it commonplace in opal jewelry because the gem stone is somewhat delicate.
In addition, while the process is different, the large Mabe Pearls also have a stabilized backing of some sort to. Do to their size these pearls benefit from their backing and make something extremely fragile be wearable.
The physical dimensions of this intense necklace are an adjustable length of 17 inches to 19 inches and weighs an astounding 2.45 ounces (70 grams) most of which is the substantial sterling silver settings.
The length of the central potion of the necklaces is 1-1/2 inches (24mm) and the thickness varies, due to the dissimilar shaped gem stones, from 3/16 inches (5mm) of the Australian Opals to 5/16 inches (9mm) for that of the bluberous Mabe Pearls.
