description: Livorno possesses few structures, or works of art, to
arrest the attention of the connoisseur and artist. Its features are, for
the most pail, those of a bustling maritime town. By the mercantile traveller
it must ever be regarded with interest, as the gathering place of nations,
in which men of every creed and clime unite for the cultivation and extension
of commerce. And to all who take interest in the social relations of mankind,
Livorno presents the gratifying spectacle of a community composed of many
distinct bodies, mingling in good faith and amity ; each body being protected
in the enjoyment of its own religious opinions, alike secured from obloquy
and restrained from intolerance. There are places of worship for every
distinct people and creed. Amongst these may be named, the Greek Church
; the Melchiti, or Greek Church in the Arabic language ; the Eastern or
Schismatic Greeks, and the Russian Greek Church ; the Catholic Armenians
; the Arabian Maronites ; the English Episcopalian Church, and the various
forms of English Dissent ; the Scottish Presbyterian Church ; a Lutheran
and a Calvinist Church for the Germans and the Dutch ; a Mosque for Mahomedans
; and the finest Synagogue in Europe for the Jews.
