A mabe pearl is a composite pearl which means that the pearl is made from several parts.
To create a cultured pearl a small piece of shell is inserted into the muscle of a mollusk. The mollusk detects this piece of intrusive shell and begans to create nacre to surround the pearl and protect itself from this foreign object.
When the seed is placed directly into the muscle of the mollusk, a round pearl is formed. When the seed is placed too close to the shell of the mollusk, the pearl that is formed is attached to the shell. This one sided pearl is cut from the shell, packed with pulverized pearl, and glued to a mother of pearl backing. This is how a mabe pearl is made. So a mabe pearl is really a pearl.
Another type of mabe pearl is a mabe shell pearl. These are made by cutting a small curved section from the outer part of a nautilus sea shell. The section of curved shell is packed with pulverized pearl and then glued to a mother of pearl backing. Technically it is a mabe pearl but should be called a mabe shell pearl.
Where does the term "mabe", as in mabe pearl, come from?
Although the term "Mabe" seems unknown of origin, it refers to the half-pearl which is cultured from the side of the oyster, rather than the body of the oyster. This produces a half-round pearl sometimes 1" in length, which is suitable for rings and any flat-backed application. They were first made in China, 500 A.D. More here:

CW Wire Jewelry Metals
Fine silver is .999% pure silver
.925 Sterling Silver: This is the most popular metal for jewelry makers due to it's durability. Sterling is comprised of 92.5% pure sliver and 7.25% copper.
Argentium Sterling Silver: Comprised of .925 silver and 7.25% germanium. It has the same properties as Sterling, except that it doesn't tarnish as easily, and requires less maintenance.
SPECIAL NOTE*** Some people who were unable to wear traditional sterling silver jewelry because of skin reactions find that they are able to wear Argentium@ Sterling Silver without any problems.
14 Kt Rolled gold wire (gold filled)------This metal was used extensively in the 1800's and is very strong and durable. It is not "gold plate."
Gold filled wire is available in 10k, 12k, and 14k, being the best quality and most durable. Meets Federal Quality Standards
Gold filled jewelry is sometimes referred to as "Rolled Gold". It is made by heat and pressure bonding solid 14Kt Gold to a alloy core.
The value of gold-filled is greater than gold-plated because gold-filled has an actual layer of karat gold.
This gold metal composition is what enables one to create the swirls, bends and curls used in the special designs. Gold filled wears, looks and lasts like solid gold because its outer layer is solid gold.
Everything you can see and touch is solid gold. Wears so well, it is considered a lifetime piece of jewelry and is often passed from generation to generation.
Economical with the rich look of gold at a fraction of the cost.
Remember this is NOT gold plate and can be handed down from generation to generation and is considered a lifetime piece of jewelry.
