More about this item

KIM Rudyard Kipling First edition first issue which preceded the English edition. 1901 Doubleday, 1901. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. New York: Doubleday Page, 1901. One of the top 100 books of the last century. A very good copy, square and tight, in Publisher's original green cloth with gilt lettering to the spine and front panel, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, with 10 sepia illustrations by J. Lockwood Kipling. Book has slight chipping to spine ends and minor rubbing. Half title page has a couple of closed tears at top edge as shown in the photo. This is the true first printing, which preceded the British edition, and displays 1901 on the title page. There are rhyme chapter headings only for Chapters VIII (p. 207) and XIII (p. 364). (Thus indicating a first issue book.) The story unfolds against the backdrop of the political conflict between Russia and Britain in Central Asia. in the period 1893¿98. The novel is notable for its detailed portrait of the people, culture, and varied religions of India, and features Kim, the orphaned son of an Irish soldier living a vagabond existence, who becomes involved in a great political adventure among the teeming populations, religions, superstitions, and the life of the bazaars in India. This is one of Kipling's most popular books, later turned into a great film in 1950 starring Errol Flynn. The US first precedes the London edition of 1901. Both are rare, and rarer still in this nice condition, with only a trace of wear. Doubleday Page NYC 1901 with the fine 10 duo-tone clay relief John Lockwood kipling illustrations. Basis of the superb film starring Sabu as Kim circa 1940 and later in 1950 with Dean Stockwell in the role of Kim with Errol Flynn. A Kipling masterpiece. A Kipling masterpiece.
