More about this item

This Beautiful Hopi Belt Buckle was Designed and Crafted by the late Hopi Master Silversmith Laurence Saufkie. It Prominently Features Kokopelli the Flute Player as well as other Traditional Hopi Symbols. This Wonderfull Belt Buckle is 2" in diameter and Hand Crafted in the Traditional Hopi Fashion of .925 Sterling Silver Overlaid on Oxidized Silver.

The Buckle is in Excellent Conditon with minor wear. I believe this to be one of his Earlier Pieces as The "Bear" Hallmark is the Only Marking other than "Sterling" ~ His later Pieces were also usually signed with his Last Name and a Different "Bear" Hallmark.

Lawrence Saufkie was a Master Hopi Silversmith who was taught by his father Paul Saufkie who, along with Fred Kabotie, was Credited as one of the Major Influences of the Hopi overlay style in the 1940s that Today is known as the “traditional” Hopi style.

Lawrence work covered 6 Decades and won many jewelry awards. In 1998 he was named an Arizona Indian Living Treasure. His Work is Featured on Museum Collections at Peabody Museum, Harvard University, Heard Museum and the Museum of Northern Arizona. His Work has been featured in every Definitive Book on Hopi Jewelers.

Lawrence died June 15, 2011 in a car accident.
