An
absolute necessity for leatherworking, leather goods making, saddlery,
harnessmaking, and other branches of the leather trades.. This is the
leather goods, saddler's, and harnessmaker's needle made. Thissale
is ONLY for the No. 0.
BEGINNERS TAKE
NOTICE. THIS is the kind of awl that you need unless you are starting
with footwear, for which see our other listings. If you are making
leather goods, accessories, belts, cases, bags, saddlery, or harness,
this is your needle .We have all sizes available:-
00. 0. 1. 2. 3. 4. Barnsley are the best makers of these awls, made at Sheffield, England.
USE.
Determine the size of thread that you need for your work. Match the
thread to the appropriate size of needle. Determine the number of
stitches to the inch that your work requires, which is somewhat
dictated by the size of thread. Take the appropriate Pricking Iron
(yes, we have them; please ask), and mark your line of stitch. Select
the size of awl (a leatherworker's awl, saddler's awl, harness awl:
please see our othersales) for the hole. Make up your thread
(please ask). Thread your needle. Make the hole with your awl (which is
usually done at an oblique angle so that the stitches will lie flat and
straight), and sew your stitch, usually from both sides (please ask),
by passing the needle, of which you have attached one to each side of
the thread, meaning that you need two needles to sew with, through the
leather and pulling tight. When done, even out the stitches with a
Paste Hammer (Smasher to Saddlers, Closer's Hammer to Shoe and
Boomakers).
Sewing leather is
nothing less than a fine art that requires the abovenamed tools, and is
not learnt in a day. There is so little good sewing done nowadays that
it is appalling, and many people are deluded into thinking that good
work is done easily or by cutting corners. We strongly advise that you
obtain and study Manual Nº 1 by Francis Burdett-Mills (please ask),
which is a mine of information, one of the few works ever published on
the subject by a Master (he made Marilyn Monroe's luggage amongst other
things), and will amply repay the perusal.
We are slowly
adding all kinds of traditional items for use in the home, kitchen,
garden, field, yard, barn, sty, and stable. Please let us know what you
are looking for. There is an alternative to cheap and nasty. We try to
find what people still make, and, if we cannot, we dabble in antiques.
One way or another, we can usually find what you are looking for.
We
specialise in the best traditional tools and materials for
Leatherworking, Taxidermy, Bookbinding, Leather Goods Making, Shoe and
Boot Making, Saddlery, Woodworking, Carving, Stoneworking, and,

venerable firm of Messrs. George Barnsley & Son, Ltd., established
in the early nineteenth century and still owned and managed by the
original family. Unlike other old firms, Messrs. Barnsley have NOT
compromised on quality. Now in our seventh year. We have been steadily
reviving certain tools as well. Please let us know what you require.
Leather Goods Makers, Saddlers, and Related Makers please note that we have all of your tools, too.

OUR POLICY ABOUT DELIVERY.
We
have tried every carrier in the English-speaking world and every method
of getting the items to our customers quickly and safely. No system has
been found to be absolutely satisfactory. The only sure thing is that
every year brings higher costs. U. S, Mail has just gone up, Royal Mail
are about to raise their prices, and so on. So, our new policy is
as follows. Anything going to anybody in the United States will come
direct from us in California, even if we have to back-order it.
Anything made in England going elsewhere will normally be sent direct
from England, but there may be exceptions. Articles made in the U. S.
A. will be sent direct from us in California to any destination unless
we have arranged for direct delivery from the manufacturer. This
means that there may be times in which customers will unfortunately
have to wait. Because of quirks of all kinds, that is why we allow 30
days for handling. Handling time is not delivery time. Delivery time
may be as long as 15 days in the U. S. A. and possibly longer abroad.
Unless there has been a confused address, we have never seen anything
take longer than 21 days from start to finish, but things can and do go
awry. We shall, of course, work with you. And, in cases wherein
articles go from one country to another, there may be Customs delays
and duty, for which you are liable. Customs may, can, and do open
parcels for any reason at any time. We try to combine items
wherever possible but this may not always be possible. Combining items
will save you a ton of money in costs of delivery. Indeed, we
recommend that you first think through everything that you need and
then place the order for everything at the same time. This will cut
your costs dramatically. "shipping policy" ought also to be
consulted, and so ought Paypal's, which is more draconian. To put
ourselves in complete compliance with both policies, we require that
all articles be signed for and indemnifiable, which unfortunately adds
to your cost; if we do not do this, both you and we are subject to
loss. Loss rarely happens, but it can. So, if you need RUSH
DELIVERY, please tell us IMMEDIATELY with your order. That means WITH
YOUR ORDER, not even a minute or a day afterwards. If you are paying by
Paypal, which is the only way in which you can speed your order, there
is a place for a message. Or tell us by an email through. Or ring
us in advance - 805-636-3087. RUSH DELIVERY will cost you a
fortune and it will take at least one working day to organise. If we
have to arrange the order overseas, it may take a day longer because of
different time zones and the transfer of funds. So, please PLAN your
RUSH ORDER in advance. We are always available to talk with you
and you have our telephone number. Unless we are ill, which happens, we
act very quickly, but please work with us. Thank you for reading this. CUSTOMERS IN THE U. K. and IRELAND PLEASE NOTE!!!! There
is a special discount to be applied to carriage for articles made in
the U. K. and sent to customers in the U. K. and Ireland. This discount
must, however, be applied manually, and so please let us know if you
would like the discount - if you don;t remind us, we may overlook it,
and, once the order has been made, it will be too late for you! This
offer applies, therefore, ONLY if you remind us at the time of your
order!!!
