Antique King James Bible owned by the Mabel Buchanan family of Chicago IL in 1879. This Sunday School Teacher's Edition Bible has cross references on the sides of the text.
There are some wonderful personal letters from Robert written to his wife Mabel, all of which are written in prose. These letters are in remarkably good condition!
There are personal Bible study notes in pencil and in ink written to the sides of the text on many pages.
Robert Stewart Buchanan and his wife Mabel R. Buchanan were both children of attorneys. They married in 1877, based on what I can gather from the records.
Robert was an Illinois accountant in his professional life, and was a member of the Illinois Society of Public Accountants, as well as the Veteran Corps. Their first child, Persis, died of diphtheria on February 19,1884. They also had a son named Bertram Oliver Buchanan, according to records within the Bible.
Two personal hand written letters in excellent condition are included as well.
There are hand written notes regarding family births, deaths, and weddings. Also, there are some family obituaries included, one of which is Robert. Another is the son of Mabel Buchanan, Persis Buchanan, and a third obituary is of John S Buchanan of Adams street in Oak Park, Illinois. The obituary states that John was loved by many in the USA as well as Canada, giving evidence of either travel or possibly dual citizenship. It also states that John lived a very Christian life example.
There is a newspaper article about the second coming of Christ dated April 13, 1918. Also included is a newspaper clipping of a New Years sermon from 1926.
The Buchanan family was a prosperous family with roots in Canada and in Ingleside, Chicago. The two personal letters included are written with impeccable handwriting and are in humorous rhyming form. It does seem a shame that a family would ever let this Bible, or these letters leave their family.
Even though some of the pages are tattered, and the book is loose in its binding, the family's personal letters and hand-written notes, timely articles, and poems are in remarkably good shape, and are an incredible find!
At the conclusion of the book of Revelations, there are another 250 plus pages loaded with information to help the reader comprehend a variety of subjects related to life during biblical times.
