These fret and tear the river into foam and bubbling circles, and the great mass of tortured water is so imposing, that when you stand upon the bridges connecting Goat and Bath Islands with the American shore, and which are below the level of the stream a few hundred yards above, and turn your eyes up the river, the spectacle is not less tremendous than that of a huge sea rushing towards you with frenzied velocity. Yet you stand upon a bridge twenty-eight rods long, leading to the small Bath Island of about two acres, whence another of sixteen rods in length conducts to Goat Island. These Islands and bridges are in the very midst of the rapids, and you turn from looking up the river to watch its last sweep toward the cauldron, over which hangs the shimmering mist, and whence the deep, incessant murmur contrasts with the more eager rush of the rapids. Around the rapids clusters the beauty of Niagara. In the foliage, kept green for ever by the wind-tossed spray, and hanging outward from the margin of the little islands over the leaping and dashing fury of the water; in the quiet, open, green spaces of the eastern part of Goat Island, in the shadowed coves of its southern shore where the stream has channelled a narrow way in one point, entirely bowered under trees; in these sweet and strange contrasts of the frenzy of nature with its softest and most secluded aspects, lies the beauty of the place. Even here, as you sit under the trees and watch tlie smooth leap of the dark water, you hear the majestic sound of that which leaped beneath your eyes a moment since, and now plunges sullenly with the rest, making Niagara. Over the precipice one hundred million tons of water hourly plunge. The figures convey little fancy of the mass to the mind. But after passing along the stately forest-aisles of Goat Island, and by the margin of the English rapids, if you descend to the little stone tower, forty-five feet in height, and ascend by a spiral interior staircase to the outer gallery, around its top, you will find yourself confronted with the river and hanging over the very cataract, in a building based upon the rocky ledge over which the water falls. That is a point and a sensation entirely unspeakable. There is an intense human interest in the solemn sweep of the river as it nears the brink, which affects the spectator like a tragedy. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Martin2001 Satisfaction Guaranteed Policy ! TURKEY Trebizond on Black Sea - 1887 Wood Engraving

Full star smallFull star smallFull star smallFull star smallFull star small

This old engraving has substantiated and stimulated a recent interest of mine; this physical thing now hangs in front of my reading chair, and I have found the digital copy of the charming old book from which it was cut (VOYAGES AND TRAVELS OR SCENES IN MANY LANDS VOLUME
de Colange, Leo (Ed.)).
Published by E.W. Walker, Boston, MA (1887))
I recommend enjoying some of the 19th century paintings under "Trabzon in art" in commons.wikipedia., which is where I first discovered this one. In some of these it is the artists viewpoint of serious (not ) peacefulness that I especially enjoy, and now this is substantiated, in front of my reading chair.
