A Japanese Toilet Another Fine Quality Print from Martin2001 Brief narrative about the subject depicted at the bottom of the page. Girard makes use of the little carved Japanese slides in ivory, called netsukes. In these delicately-sculptured toys we constantly see the belle of Niphon at her toilet, undergoin the manipulation of the bath at the hands of her maids, and shining in the natural hue of the ivory with the unveiled charm of her polished and slippery flesh. In M. Girard's painting we see not only the beauty, in her cold nudity as of the elephant's tooth, but the light- and-shade of the scene, the color and the environment. The lady of the mansion, in an interior which makes us sigh for the land where the best oriental bric-a-brac is only every-day furniture, is under the hands of her maids after the bath. While one of them arranges her hair, she touches the string of the native mandolin. The types of visage are as carefully arranged to match the Japanese physiognomy as is convenient in Paris, where models from that distant land are not for hire in the studios. Possibly a daimio would not find the faces perfectly national, but to us outer barbarians they seem as Eastern as possible, and besides, the preoccupation of the artist was for other qualities; he wished to arrange a subject of Japanese figures, not in the flat inlaid colors of the ordinary Japanese picture, but in our own full luxury of chiaroscuro, in our completeness of perspective, our science of color as effected by shadow and distance. The picture was to be a studio interior, with Japanese bibelots and Japanese figures for pretext; this being the artist's motive, it was little to him whether a Japanese beauty ever climbed the stairs of his atelier, in sash and socks and loops of hair, to apply for employment among his train of female models. TURKEY Trebizond on Black Sea - 1887 Wood Engraving

Full star smallFull star smallFull star smallFull star smallFull star small

This old engraving has substantiated and stimulated a recent interest of mine; this physical thing now hangs in front of my reading chair, and I have found the digital copy of the charming old book from which it was cut (VOYAGES AND TRAVELS OR SCENES IN MANY LANDS VOLUME
de Colange, Leo (Ed.)).
Published by E.W. Walker, Boston, MA (1887))
I recommend enjoying some of the 19th century paintings under "Trabzon in art" in commons.wikipedia., which is where I first discovered this one. In some of these it is the artists viewpoint of serious (not ) peacefulness that I especially enjoy, and now this is substantiated, in front of my reading chair.
