For Sale Another Fine Quality Print from Martin2001 Brief narrative about the subject depicted at the bottom of the page. Print Specifics: Type of print: Photogravure - Original antique print Year of printing: not indicated in the print - est. 1876 Original artist: Gerome Publisher: George Barrie, Publisher, Philadelphia Condition: 1 (1. Engraved facsimile of the artist signature under the image. 1 inch = 2,54 cm. Narrative: HERE again is licentiousness of topic blended with conscientiousness of observation โ€” patient scruple of narrative as of St. Augustine applied to objectionable matter as of Aphra Behn. The writer having described this canvas elsewhere, in an examination of the fine American gallery where it reposes, is fain to return upon his own thoughts, if not upon his own words, in introducing the masterpiece in another sequence. Against the wall of a bazaarโ€”within whose window a dull - looking Turk sits as shopman, facing a pet parrot, and showing all the patience of a spider in his lairโ€”the odalisques are sunning themselves. Six spiritless women, seemingly without hope and without interest in the future, certainly without shame or protest, compose the market for the day. Two of the captives are standing; one of these is the pearl of the picture, that sculptural nymph at the left, a statuette of ennui, clasping her lifted hands and treading on her garments, possibly in a dream of her Circassian hills; her tresses descend to the knee, and her armlet looks more than half a fetter, her tint is that of old ivory, and she seems as if carved out of stillness, a figure fit to be the Divinity of Slavery. Possibly the lassitude of her expression deceives us, and she eagerly awaits an expected purchaser, like Namouna in Musset's poem. Martin2001 Satisfaction Guaranteed Policy! TURKEY Trebizond on Black Sea - 1887 Wood Engraving

Full_star_smallFull_star_smallFull_star_smallFull_star_smallFull_star_small

This old engraving has substantiated and stimulated a recent interest of mine; this physical thing now hangs in front of my reading chair, and I have found the digital copy of the charming old book from which it was cut (VOYAGES AND TRAVELS OR SCENES IN MANY LANDS VOLUME
de Colange, Leo (Ed.)).
Published by E.W. Walker, Boston, MA (1887))
I recommend enjoying some of the 19th century paintings under "Trabzon in art" in commons.wikipedia., which is where I first discovered this one. In some of these it is the artists viewpoint of serious (not ) peacefulness that I especially enjoy, and now this is substantiated, in front of my reading chair.
