OF MEN & MARSHESPaul ErringtonIn this book of memories and philosophy, Professor Errington portrays sunsets and frosts and new snow, ducks filling skies and covering waters, shore birds running on mud flats, fishes in shallows.
From his recollections of sounds we hear the booming of prairie chickens, the roaring medley of bird calls on marshes in summer, the whistle of goldeneye wings in flight.
Vividly he describes living things adjusting to change - muskrats during flood and drought, waterfowl migration in a snow storm, fishes and water insects and other animals fighting for life under thickening ice.
Taking a humanistic and historic view, as well as descriptive one, Professor Errington shows the effect of man on these marsh communities. He draws striking parallels between marsh societies and human societies. Expressing a philosophy that includes a reverence for the ancient interrelationships of native plants, animals, soils, and climates, he believes that man can show his degree of civilization by not destroying unnecessarily the remnants of marshlands and other existing wild areas.
