Description
of the subject depicted in the print:
Rue Croulebarbe, once on the banks of the Bievre, has an old-world, village-like aspect. The buildings bordering the broad Avenue des Gobelins are devoid of interest, but beneath several of them important Roman remains have been found, and besides the old streets running into the avenue in the immediate vicinity of the Gobelins Factory, we find at intervals other old streets and passages with many interesting vestiges; at No. 37, the Cour des Rames. The city gate St-Marcel stood in past days across the avenue where the house No. 45 now stands. In Rue Le Brun we see the remains of the hotel where, in the early years of the eighteenth century, dwelt Jean Julienne, the master of the Gobelins. Rue du Banquier shows many curious old-time houses.

In 1827 rue Croulebarbe made the headlines when the goat girl of Ivry, Aim©e Millot, was stabbed to death by the mentally unbalanced Honor© Ulbach in the middle of a thunderstorm - an appropriate setting for a melodrama. Aim©e would come here every day with her goats and sit reading a book, looking lovely in her straw hat. Her murder aroused outraged compassion all over Paris: even the sensational arrival of the first giraffe in the Jardin des Plantes - the first ever to tread French soil - was overshadowed by the crime. Ulbach was among the last convicts to be put to death on Place de Gr¨ve (now H´tel-de-Ville), the traditional place of public executions in Paris up to the reign of Louis-Philippe. However, after the three-day riots of July 1830 that brought Louis-Philippe to the throne, the new King vowed never again to carry out executions on Place de Gr¨ve as a token of gratitude to the people of Paris, who had supported him heroically on that site.
