of the subject depicted in the print:
The street de l'Epicerie is the more remarkable through its having undergone none of the renovations of the old Nomran city. Such as it was three centuries ago, such is it still at present day [ca 1880]. It is always the same confusion of dislocated woodwork, of projecting roofs and angular skylights, the corners of which seem to play hide and seek in the perspective, whilst at the bottom like a radiant apparition, the cathedral towers aloft, crowned itself by its gigantic spire. A quaint street, more fantastical and curious than any of the others, with its smoked stalles, its blackened shops, where everything is sold, from list-shoes and birch-brooms to common ribbons and old coats newly fitted up.
