'Dancing Flame' Sage (Salvia vanhoutenii 'Dancing Flame')
aka Variegated Red Sage
The variegated leaves on this smaller salvia is really a star in the garden! Yellow and gold variegation covers each and every leaf on this 2 to 3' perennial. Because it is smaller, this salvia can be used as a border plant or planted at the base of taller salvias for contrast. This salia produces sporadically blooming brilliant red blooms that host in small clusters.
'Dancing Flame' is cold-hardy in USDA Zone 8b through 11 and should be considered a container salvia in smaller zones. It cannot sustain temperatures of 35 degrees or below, but can and should be placed in full sun for increased blooming.
Overview
Salvias have been grown since ancient times. Our primary purpose is to enjoy the beautiful addition of color in the home garden. The salvias we grow are most commonly from Texas, the Southwest and Mexico. These are highly ornamental, heat tolerant, and have moderate to low moisture needs. We consider these plants critical components of any Hummingbird, Bee and/or Butterfly Garden.
Almost all of the plants should be grown to receive a minimum of 4 to 6 hours of sun, but tend to bloom more profusely in high shade or partial shade. All of our salvia plants have proven to be pest and disease-free, require very little maintenance in the garden, and because many have scented foliage, are considered deer-resistant.
Salvias accept multiple soils including clay, but the plants do benefit from a side-dressing of compost prior to bloom cycle.
